Ducati Hypermotard 1100 Evo SP

Hypermotard 1100 EVO SP: The Desmodue Evoluzione Engine

The lightweight, L-Twin stands at the pinnacle of more than three decades of Desmo air-cooled development and its torquey power delivery has excited riders worldwide. The Evoluzione version is positively awesome and makes it the perfect engine to give its name to the Hypermotard 1100EVO SP.

The 1100cc Desmodue Evoluzione power unit uses a bore and stroke of 98 x 71.5mm, and its long list of refinements boosted its power to 95hp (69.9kW) @ 7500rpm with 76lb-ft (10.5kgm) of torque @ 5750rpm giving it outstanding power delivery, from grunting low rpms to the singing howl at redline.

The 1100's crankcases are vacuum cast using the same Vacural technology employed for the lightweight Superbike engines, a process that achieves significant weight saving and ensures consistent wall thickness and increased strength.

But the crankcases were just the starting point of the evolution. Apart from the magnesium alternator cover, the 1100 has a lighter crankshaft assembly by using an 848-style Superbike flywheel and the search for further weight reduction even went as far as using lightweight rare-earth magnets for the generator assembly. The result reduced the original 1100 power unit's weight by a staggering 5.2kg (11.5lb) and contributed towards making the Hypermotard 1100EVO even more agile.

Power gains have come not only from the new lightweight crankshaft assembly, but also from an evolution of the top-end of the Desmodue power unit. The cylinder head, not only improves lubrication and cooling performance, but also uses a redesigned inlet port shape for optimum flow and a modified combustion chamber shape for improved burn efficiency.

This improved efficiency is the result of a higher compression ratio and the change to a single spark per cylinder ignition managed by high-speed Siemens electronics.

Ensuring a sufficient feed to the higher compression set-up is a high-flow airbox intake duct and higher-lift valves for maximum volumetric efficiency.

The incredible valve performances of the Desmodue engine are only possible because of Ducati's unique Desmodromic system, where valve closure is activated mechanically. At high rpm it would be almost impossible for the valve to follow the steep closure profile of the cam lobe if it were relying upon a normal valve spring.

With the Desmo system, the valve is closed mechanically with the same accuracy as it is opened, enabling steep cam profiles and radical cam timings. This system is used on every single Ducati power unit including their world-beating Superbike and Desmosedici MotoGP engines.

In keeping with its extreme character, Ducati continue to use the 'dry' racing-style clutch for the Hypermotard 1100, the popular preference of thousands of Ducatisti the world over. The clutch and alternator covers are finished in gold for the 1100EVO SP.

Hypomotard 1100 EVO SP: Intense Suspension

Longer, black-bodied, fully adjustable 50mm Marzocchi forks have 30mm (1.2in) more travel and increase the SP's ground clearance by 30mm (1.2in), extending the SP's extreme cornering performance and providing a more track-oriented set-up.

Coated with a durable low friction, DLC (diamond-like carbon) black coating, the sliders enable the Hypermotard 'SP' to respond effortlessly to every minute variation in the tarmac, improving on its already impressive road holding.

The advanced 'SP' suspension is further enhanced with an Öhlins remote reservoir rear shock, renowned in racing as the ultimate performance choice. This incredible shock is fully adjustable for compression and rebound damping as well as spring pre- load, ensuring that the 'SP' is readily adaptable to every riding style and road or track it challenges.

Hypomotard 1100 EVO SP: Superior Brakes

With a bike as extreme as the Hypermotard 1100EVO SP, superior stopping power is fundamental, so world- class braking performance is assured by using the same Brembo Monobloc calipers as on Ducati's top Superbikes.

Machined from a single piece of alloy, the calipers achieve a higher rigidity and resistance to distortion during extreme braking, which not only delivers incredible braking power, but also provides an enhanced and precise 'feel' at the brake lever. The twin Monobloc calipers, each with four 34mm pistons gripping 305mm discs, guarantee spectacular braking performance.

Hypomotard 1100 EVO SP: Lightweight Wheels by Marchesini

Extreme riders know that one of the best ways to improve the handling and performance of a motorcycle is to reduce its unsprung weight by upgrading to superior lightweight wheels.

Even from a distance, the 5- spoke black Marchesini wheels with red pin-striping confirm the high performance of the Hypermotard 1100EVO SP.

Created from forged then machined alloy, both front and rear wheels are significantly lighter and create a lower moment of inertia and unsprung weight, resulting in improved acceleration and braking as well as quicker steering. Mounted to the lightweight wheels are Z-rated Pirelli Diablo Supercorsa SP tires.

Designed to deliver racing performance on the road, they give great feedback, are stable under severe braking and feature a sure-footed 'feel' when braking or accelerating is applied at considerable lean angles.

Aprilia RSV 4R

Aprilia have announced the 2010 RSV4 R, a cheaper version of the RSV4 Factory. Instead of Öhlins suspension, the RSV4 R gets a Showa fork and Sachs shock, its 60-degree V4 makes do with aluminium parts instead of the Factory’s magnesium bits, and the chassis isn’t adjustable for swingarm pivot point, steering head angle and engine position.

The significantly cheaper RSV4 R’s Showa/Sachs suspension is fully adjustable and the engine still produces 180bhp (though we suspect it may not be able to rev as high and/or as quickly as the RSV4 Factory’s engine). Also, with its ride-by-wire electronics, the bike still has three ride modes – Race, Sport and Road – for optimised power delivery for whatever conditions you might encounter.

Plastic instead of carbonfibre trim, aluminium instead of forged magnesium wheels and a bit more weight the R weighs 184kg, about five kilos more than the Factory

Aprilia RSV4 R brings the technology and unique character of the V4 that redefined sports performance on the track within the reach of all enthusiasts. With the advent of the R version, the Aprilia RSV4 - the bike that took the world by storm and set new standards for sports performance, both on the road and on the circuits of the SBK World Championship - is now accessible to an even broader group of enthusiasts.

RSV4 R maintains the same features that make the Aprilia RSV4 project so unique: the narrow 180 hp V4 engine, Ride-by-Wire integrated electronic management, dual injectors, race bred frame and suspension and extreme compactness.

Christened by Max Biaggi, the Aprilia RSV4 R is the latest product of the project that has brought Aprilia back to the pinnacle of the motorcycle world, both on the world's circuits and on the road.

A revolutionary project - starting from a blank piece of paper and drawing from the marque's unparalleled success on the racetrack - that led to the inception of the RSV4 SBK, the bike that Biaggi rode straight to victory in the World Superbike Championship, and a production bike which, in its Factory guise dedicated to circuit racing professionals, redefined the limits for the supersports genre.

Aprilia now presents the RSV4 R, a bike born from the same project in a new, more accessible guise, conceived to bring this fantastic machine within reach of expert riders who want to experience its technological supremacy.

To offer you the same sensations as you carve a perfect line from apex to apex that Max Biaggi experiences on the track in the World Superbike Championship, the Aprilia RSV4 R maintains all the features that make the superbike project so unique:

• COMPACTNESS: Minimised dimensions and weight, a 65° V4 engine as narrow as a twin, a chassis architecture defined around the engine and an effective but essential fairing.

• ENGINE PERFORMANCE: Class leading power, the torque of a twin, combined with the smooth power delivery and flexibility of a four cylinder, and dual injectors per cylinder. Technical and architectural solutions worthy of a genuine race prototype.

• ELECTRONICS: Second generation Ride by Wire with multiple maps (track, sport and road).

• CHASSIS ARCHITECTURE: Class beating solutions true to Aprilia traditions. The aluminium frame is built around the engine for maximum effectiveness both on the track and on the road. Suspension is completely adjustable.

• ITALIAN DESIGN: The unique style of the RSV4 R is the product of a painstaking design process and was conceived and developed in Aprilia's own design centre. The styling solutions enhance the bike's class beating compactness, which is further emphasised by the spectacular, ultra-short tail fairing.

Aprilia RS 125 Poggiali

Aprilia RS125 Poggiali

If you're sensible and treat it as an 80mph bike and occasionally play, it'll last you for ages. After a few miles of fun roll the throttle off and let it cool down for a bit: then play again. Another thing RS125 owners get caught out by is cold seizure; allow the bike to warm up properly. The temperature gauge may show the engine warming up, but as it warms to the point that the thermostat opens, cold water is pumped from the radiator around the engine shrinking it onto the pistons. This is particularly a problem on cold, frosty days. Start your bike up before you put on your gear, and then pull away at half throttle for the first couple of miles.

The Monster 796 is the perfect synthesis between sports performances, aesthetics and daily riding pleasure — combining the user-friendliness of the 696 model with the sports performance of the 1100. The mid-range Monster features Ducati’s brand new air-cooled L-twin Desmodue 796 engine at its heart, which boasts 87 hp while weighing in at just 368 lbs (167 kgs). Moreover, as should be expected of such an aesthetically pristine Italian brand, the Monster 796 comes out of the box available in a variety of beautiful colorways — all part of the Monster Art project, Logomania. Logomania plays tribute to famous Ducati logos and historical color schemes that span more than 50 years of brand heritage. First introduced in 2009, the Monster Art project offered an additional 10 colors, 3 of which will be retained for this 2010 model range, as well as introducing 7 new schemes. Consisting of tank panels, micro-bikini fairing, single-seat cover and front mudguard, the kits have become a unique method of Monster personalization, making it the perfect way to ease yourself into a Ducati. And for around $9,995, the money’s more than right, too.

Ducati 1098R Troy Bayliss Limited Edition

Troy Bayliss is a Ducati legend. In celebration of his victory in the 2008 World Superbike Championship aboard the 1098 R, and the end of a career that proudly claims three World Championships aboard three generations of Ducati Superbike, the factory have built a 1098 R Bayliss Limited Edition.

Enjoying exactly the same high specification as the standard 'R' model, the 1098 R Bayliss Limited Edition has a special colour scheme designed by Aldo Drudi. The livery, which was used during Troy's final race at Portimao in Portugal, incorporates the key colours of his success. Sporting the famous number '21' on the pearl white nose and side-fairing number plates, the red and white paint scheme uses the dark blue background of the Australian national flag to blend beautifully along the side of the bodywork and into the unpainted carbon fibre stripe along the seat unit. This attention to fine detail is also evident in features like the carbon lower-fairing finished in red, except for aerodynamic recess for the side-stand, which remains natural carbon fibre. A subtle '1098 R Bayliss Limited Edition' graphic on the tail fairing leaves no doubt as to what this magnificent bike is.

The striking design contrasts perfectly against the 5-spoke wheels finished in matte black and additional special features like the carbon fibre heat shield on the exhaust.

The 1098 R Bayliss Limited Edition will be limited to only 500 units and comes with a numbered plaque on the top fork clamp, indicating exactly where in the limited edition the motorcycle was built. The number also corresponds to a numbered commemorative desk-top plaque, beautifully encased for safe keeping and bearing the engraved signatures of Ducati Motor Holding CEO Gabriele Del Torchio and Ducati Corse triple World Superbike Champion, Troy Bayliss.

In addition, the model will be supplied with a full racing exhaust system including 102dB carbon fibre mufflers by Termignoni (strictly for track use only), a dedicated ECU, branded bike cover and rear paddock stand.

What better way to mark the incredible career of Troy Bayliss than by Ducati building the 1098 R Bayliss Limited Edition.

Troy Bayliss

Troy Bayliss is a Ducati legend. His racing career with Ducati has taken him from amateur obscurity to professional stardom, winning three World Championships on three different generations of Superbike. His 'never-give-up' style fight to the top, powered by Ducati's passion for victory have been food and drink to 'Ducatisti' all over the world.

Arriving in Europe in 1998, Troy immediately found his way by winning the 1999 British Superbike Championship aboard a Ducati 996. His success took him to the AMA series for Ducati in the US, but an early season call-up from the factory to replace the injured Carl Fogarty in World Superbike brought him back across the Atlantic to Europe. It only took a few races before Troy clinched his first world level race win at Hockenheim aboard the 996 R. More of the same performances that year secured the support of thousands of fans, scored him 6th in the World Championship and helped Ducati lift the Manufacturers' title.

2001 was the year that Bayliss had been working for. His 996 R Ducati took him all the way to the top, clinching his first World Superbike Championship title and another Manufacturers' title for Ducati. If 2001 had been the year that proved Troy 'the rider' to Ducati, then 2002 would be the year that proved Troy 'the sportsman' to his fans. A tough and hard-fought season on the 998 R came down to the wire at the final race in Imola. His two 2nd place finishes that weekend were dubbed 'the Superbike races of all time', but it was the way in which he conceded the title and stepped up the podium with a smile on his face that won the hearts of his fans.

For 2003 Troy moved across to Ducati's new MotoGP project aboard the Desmosedici. It may have been his first year on the Grand Prix scene, but his rookie status didn't stop him scoring three podiums and closing the season an incredible 6th in the World Championship. 2004 proved considerably harder, however, and the Australian struggled to 14th in the series.

After a year away from Ducati, Troy returned to the Ducati Superbike team in 2006, hungry to fight his way back to the top and prove that he was still champion material. He did just that. His first year aboard the Ducati 999 R secured him his second World Superbike Championship and returned the Manufacturers' title to Ducati. At the end of the 2006 season he also got the chance to prove that he could win at MotoGP level. Drafted in as a last-minute replacement to the injured Sete Gibernau, Troy qualified the Desmosedici GP6 on the front row of the grid at the Valencia Grand Prix and powered to a convincing, spectacular and popular victory.

2007 Troy struggled against injuries as he rode the now ageing 999 R to its absolute limit. Disappointed with finishing 4th in the World Superbike Championship and now considering retirement, the one thing that kept Troy motivated was the imminent arrival of the 1098 R.

With a capacity of 1198cc, in accordance with new Superbike regulations, Troy's 2008 bike powered him back to the top where he belonged. Securing both the Riders' and Manufacturers' titles in Magny-Cours with just one race left on the calendar, Troy achieved his goal and completed a dream career that had seen him win World Championships on three generations of Ducati Superbikes — 996 R, 999
